Giant Clams were once on the very edge of extinction. Thankfully, some governments began to repopulate the colonies. The presence of the giant clams in their ecosystems creates a shift at multiple levels. They play a vital role in filtering the water and restoring the coral reefs. Now that the repopulation is successfully underway, the opportunity has now been created for science to discover the genius of this marvellous species. This Fable asks us to be mindful of our impact on the ecosystems and the animals which live symbiotically within them.

This Fable was inspired by Neo Mei Lin. She works at the St. John’s Island National Marine Laboratory of the Marine Science Institute of the NUS. During her studies, she developed a keen interest in marine conservation, and the plight of giant clams in particular. Her passion and commitment to save the giant clams from extinction resulted in two restocking programmes in Singapore, with the aim to breed and raise young clams for reintroduction onto the reefs.

Gunters Fables are structured to include the following learning guides and categories: Did you Know, Think about it, Teachers and Parents Guide, Academic Knowledge, Emotional Intelligence, The Arts, Systems: Making the Connections, Capacity to Implement and who the Fable is Inspired By!
